Why validate a VAT number?
VIES is the EU's official system for verifying VAT numbers. If you sell B2B to a business in another EU country, you must validate its VAT number to apply the reverse charge (0% VAT) legally — an invoice built on an invalid number is a problem in an audit. Some countries (e.g. Germany, Spain) confirm validity but don't return the business name.
